I don't care what anybody says, the end all be all version of Visions of Johanna is the 16 minute studio version on the bonus disc from the Garcia "All Good Things" box set. Hell it's even better than any version Dylan ever did.

Last time I saw Dylan (Oct 2007) I wished and hoped I'd get to hear one, but I figured it would never happen. That song has always been very special to me and I would have paid the full ticket price just to have him come out, play Visions, then leave the stage. Halfway through the show, he played it. Sure he sounded like the cookie monster, but it was still one of the most moving concert experiences of my life.

"Visions", has long been my favorite Dylan song, and , like you, it is special to me . I got to hear Dylan do it live once in 89... and wished I hadn't ...
He just slaughtered it . No feeling at all . Be careful what you wish for ...
The only versions that might edge Jerry out, and just barely, are Dylan's own from 66, which is really saying something !

Y'know, I don't have that All Good Things bonus disc, have never heard it....sigh!

It's hard for me to imagine anything being better than Dylan's '66 acoustic versions.
But, my favorite later-era Dylan version (that I've heard so far) was from 6/24/96 Luxembourg....mind-blowing.

Aw man, you guys are really missing out on that bonus disc. The Visions is just one of 2 major highlights. The track before Visions is a really, really intense instrumental, at the end of which Jerry says something to the effect of, "yeah...hell yeah, man! Talk about some modrine(?) shit." I have no idea what that word is or what it means. I just call it the "Modrine Jam." It's 'officially" listed as "T.L.E.O. Jam," but it sounds different, more unique than just a jam on TLEO.

Then there is the Visions...I wish I knew more about it in terms of date and who plays on it and such. Based on the dates listed on it (1974, 1976, 1982), it is possibly studio outtakes from the Compliments, Reflections, or Run for the Roses sessions. Hard to tell. Jerry still sounds pretty "young." I would probably go with 76.

It starts out with a nice traditional piano, thoughtful drumming, and a sweet sounding clean tone by Garcia. Jerry sings the verses so sweetly and with much emotion. After the verses there is a solid 6+ minutes of alternating leads between piano and guitar, which just fades out around the 16 minute mark. The piano is especially brilliant, I wish I knew who it was. Keith?

For anyone who hasn't heard it, I would fully welcome any and all to come over at any time and make me play it for you. I'm really, really tempted to post a link to an MP3 of it. I mean to the best of my knowledge it IS an "out of print" bonus disc, it's not really anything you can just go out and buy officially. But I don't want to violate any rules. Perhaps if you REALLY wanna hear it, email me and we can, um, "work out some plans for you to come over and listen to it..."

The amount of Dead music that's been released only on unavailable bonus discs is absurd... It's kind of like the old custom some bands had of releasing extra tracks on Japan-only LPs, just so they'd be rare...

Out of circulation bonus disc's from various GD releases could be released as the "Grateful Dead Bonus Disc Collection" I'd buy it.
I poked around Piratebay and had to run a malware app just to shake off the flea's from looking :(
I'll just stick to the somewhat legal torrents like bt.etree, dimeadozen, shnflac
